Hue is actually known for its tasty cuisine, so when you are thinking of how long should you stay in the city, add at least one more day only to eat your way around.

We really enjoyed the sight of tombs and pagodas reminding us that Hue was once the capital city of the country.
Hue still keeps its charm, and you can feel the former imperial glory hovering above the city.
Simply put, Hue is captivating, and the best part is that travelers can explore the city either on foot, on a bike, or motorbike.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN HUE
Hue is set in wonderful countryside therefore, even the journey to the city is an experience on its own. But the true highlights lie within and outside the city's limits as well.
Visit the imperial citadel, museums, photograph stunning pagodas, walk bridges across Perfume River, bike around ancient tombs, or get lost in the local market.
Here's the list of the best things to do and see in Hue.
IMPERIAL CITADEL IN HUE
The number one attraction we enjoyed the most in Hue was the Imperial Citadel. The complex is simply wonderful, and it is not possible to describe it with words only, you need to see it yourself.
Our hotel was only a few minutes walk from the Citadel, so that was obviously the first best thing we had a chance to see in Hue.
The Citadel was built in the early 1800s, and from the very beginning, it served as the Imperial Seat of Government.
Even though the imperial days are over, the complex did not lose its atmosphere, and you can admire the exceptional architecture with thousands of details and perfectly-manicured gardens on every step.
Hue's Citadel is also called Purple Forbidden City, and it is better to spend there at least a few hours to appreciate the beauty.
It is possible to explore the grounds on own or with a guide in case you want to learn more about this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Having a camera is definitely a must here.
The entrance fee is 150 000 VND.
MUSEUM OF ROYAL ANTIQUITIES
You should not be reluctant to pay for the entrance fee to the Citadel, but in case it seems a lot to you, the good news is that you can use it in the Museum of Royal Antiquities as well.
The museum is right outside the Citadel, and it features several exhibitions that display relics from the Nguyen Dynasty such as textiles, furniture, or jewelry.
BIKE AROUND THE TOMBS OF THE EMPERORS
One of the highlights in Hue is seeing ancient tombs, and it is best combined with exploring the area's wonderful countryside.
That's why we rented a bike in our hotel and set off. For easier trip rent a motorbike.
It is only up to you how far you want to go, and what you decide to see, no decision is wrong here.
Biking around the tombs of Hue was truly our favorite experience, and we had so much fun.
On a day trip, we visited Tomb of Tu Duc, Tomb of King Thieu Tri, wonderful Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh.
It is really worth to go inside, even though the exterior with the army of statues is impressive as well. Other tombs where we stopped by were Minh Mang Tomb, and Gia Long Tomb.
If you prefer to join a group and get around the Hue's tombs more easily, some of the tombs are included in this well-rated tour.
TU HIEU PAGODA
Even if you just want to scratch the surface and see the best things in Hue, you cannot miss one of the most popular pagodas in the city, Tu Hieu Pagoda.
This structure is set in a picturesque location in the pine forest, and the visit overall is very peaceful and atmospheric.
Tu Hieu Pagoda was built in 1843 and was dedicated to the imperial eunuchs.
Tu Hieu Pagoda is a great place where to start your day of sightseeing.
When you arrive early in the morning you will be able to avoid hoards of tourists, and you will also escape the omnipresent heat in the fresh gardens.
THIEN MU PAGODA
Pagoda of the Celestial Lady also known as Thien Mu Pagoda is a must-see when visiting Hue.
We know there are many pagodas in Hue, or Vietnam in general, but you got to put this one on your bucket list.
This renowned pagoda overlooks the Perfume River, and it is easy to recognize it among others for its shape.
Thien Mu Pagoda has seven storeys (the tower is 21 meters tall) and golden Budha portraits at the base of the building. Therefore this pagoda is also an important religious center of the region.
You might get already used to the fact that many landmarks in Hue are surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Well, Thien Mu Pagoda is no different.
HON CHEN TEMPLE
Secluded Hon Chen Temple approximately 10 kilometers from Hue, on the bank of Perfume River, is another best thing to do in Hue.
The temple is also a popular stop on a boat cruise, so it is only up to you what transport option you will choose. The temple was dedicated to Goddess of the ancient Cham population.
Except for the picturesque location and unusual architecture, visitors can admire relics within many times restored temple, such as carvings, Chinese scriptures, old vases, or other antiques.
THANH TOAN BRIDGE
Same as Hoi An has its Japanese Bridge, Hue is famous for Thanh Toan Bridge. The bridge is made of wood, and the walkway across Nhu Y River is covered by a tiled roof.
Add the settings in peaceful countryside, and it won't surprise you that residents of Hue are proud of this attraction for more than 200 years.
The bridge is 17 meters long and despite its relatively small size, you will find a shrine inside dedicated to a person that provided money for the construction.
HUYEN TRAN PRINCESS TEMPLE
At the foot of Ngu Phong mountain lies yet another architectural highlight, Huyen Tran Princess Temple. This wonderful complex dedicated to the Tran dynasty will keep you busy for some time.
Except for the colorful church, you can admire splendid hilly scenery, gardens, architecture, and you should not be scared to get lost, follow one of many pathways that will take you to various gems.
The second week in January is super-busy here, because locals come to worship the anniversary of death of the Tran Dynasty princess.
Except for the temple, a statue of the princess, and gardens, do not miss visiting a library that contains documents of former kings.
If you fancy a small hike, climb 246 stairs that lead to Peace Bell.
STROLL ALONG PERFUME RIVER
If you get tired of exploring tombs and pagodas, we recommend you to get closer to the most important river in Hue, and one of the most important waterways in Vietnam, the Perfume River.
Both locals and international travelers like coming to the bank of the river, especially later in the afternoon as the promenade along Perfume Rivers is as lovely as its name.
If you are looking for a more unique way to explore the river than walking around, you can take a boat tour that will provide you with a more intimate experience.
You do not have to reserve the tour in advance, but you can combine the boat tour with sightseeing on this popular tour.
TIGER FIGHTING ARENA
Tiger Fighting Arena alias Ho Quyen is a very remarkable place only three kilometers outside Hue. The arena was erected in 1832 to entertain the emperor's family.
Are you wondering why the name and what the hell was going on here?
Well, as the name suggests, the real tigers fought here against elephants.
Regardless of how weird and cruel it sounds, the arena was really built for this purpose.
We cannot and do not want to imagine how it must have looked like, but cannot deny that except for the architecture, this place is interesting for its strange vibe.
The last fight between a tiger and elephant happened here in 1904, and the arena stands here as a reminder of these unusual events.
ALBA THANH TAN HOT SPRINGS
If you are looking for a place to relax after several days on the road, or if you have a few hours to kill before your flight, why not try Alba Thanh Tan Hot Springs?
The hot springs are located 45 minutes' drive from Hue, are surrounded by lush green forest, and you can get there either by shuttle bus, motorbike, or with a driver.
Just do not expect natural hot springs, please.
Alba Thanh Tan is a rather a resort, where you can stay overnight and enjoy various treatments, but even walk-in guests are welcome here.
You can choose a package, and decide on how long you would like to spend here.
The complex offers a wide array of things to do such as bathing in hot water, massages, eating in a restaurant, water games, spa treatments, but also ziplining.
ROYAL THEATRE
By now you probably already know that Hue has a rich history. To dig even deeper, and to get the first-hand cultural experience, head to Royal Theatre of Hue.
The building stands since 1826, and from this time it is a place where all kind of performers could show their skills, and where locals could satisfy their need for culture.
Nowadays, even tourists can come to watch a traditional Vietnamese dance and music performance that usually takes place three to four times a day, and takes around 45 minutes.
Except for the entertainment, do not forget to pay attention to the wonderful interior.
DONG BA MARKET
One of the liveliest places in Hue, and in the all province, is Dong Ba Market. We do not know much about your preferences, but we do not miss visiting a market in any place we travel to.
We really enjoy the authenticity, eating street food, and discovering things and types of veggies and fruits we've never seen and tasted before.
Simply, we travel to countries like Vietnam to explore things like this - something we do not have back home in the Czech Republic.
You can buy almost anything here on the Dong Ba market, so it is also a perfect place where to score some awesome souvenirs.
THUAN AN BEACH
A very beautiful stretch of white sandy beach is located only a short drive from Hue therefore, we think it is worth mentioning Thuan An beach among the best things to do in Hue.
Who would not fancy a couple of hours of lazing on the beach with a cold drink in hand after all day of sightseeing?

JOURNEY TO HOI AN
One of the top things to do in Hue is the journey to Hoi An.
It does not matter whether you plan on visiting Hoi An (which you definitely should, by the way) as a separate destination, the road between these two cities is absolutely jaw-dropping, and you won't make a mistake when you put it on your itinerary.
The road is only 121 kilometers long, but since there are a lot of turns and some sections are very narrow, expect that the drive will take you around three hours, plus count a bit more as you will stop often along the way to take pictures.
The absolute highlight on the road is Hai Van Pass, which features many photogenic spots and breathtaking sceneries.
In the text further below you can find more information on how to travel between Hue and Hoi An, but in short, it is possible to get there by public transport or arrange your own transport, which will give you the freedom to stop wherever you want.
WHERE TO STAY IN HUE
As a must-visit place on every Vietnam itinerary, Hue offers a wide range of accommodation for every type of traveler.
You will find here super-cheap hostels where you will pay only a few dollars, but also beautiful retreats, where you will pay a bit more, but still only a fraction of a price you would have paid in an expensive country.
We only recommend you stay close to the center as from here you will be able to see the best Hue has to offer easily, without arranging a taxi or public transport, and you will also be close to a bus terminal.

Budget | Friendly House Hotel - Super cheap and super friendly hostel close to the center has everything a backpacker on the road needs. Clean rooms, tasty breakfast, and you can choose between private rooms and dormitories.
Mid-range | Villa Hue Hotel - Wonderfully designed hotel rooms only a couple of hundred meters from Huong River is one of the best places to stay in the city for a very reasonable price.
Luxury | Azerai La Residence - This colonial residence has wonderful views and offers perfect services. Enjoy great breakfast, spa treatments, fitness center, and relaxing by the pool.
BEST TIME TO VISIT HUE
First, we had bad news. Hue is the city with the highest rainfall in Vietnam, so there is a chance you will need an umbrella or rain poncho, but it can, of course, also happen that you will luck out the weather.
Fingers cross. Set in a green landscape and surrounded by hills, the weather in Hue is quite unpredictable, but in general, visitors can experience two distinct seasons, wet and dry.
Even though Hue is not that far from Hoi An or Danang, the weather here is for sure hotter and rainier than in these two destinations, so it really pays off to check out weather forecast on daily basis.
The wet season in Hue lasts from September to December and is heavily affected by monsoons.
These months are known for cooler temperatures (especially at nights) yet humid conditions, and travelers should expect heavy downpours and floods.
Some of the businesses might be closed for this period, but on the other hand, you will be granted with lower rates.
As the rain can keep you in your hotel room for days, we would recommend traveling in this time of the year to those of you who have plenty of time and travel on an open itinerary, or to those who do not mind a bit of discomfort.
The best time to visit Hue is between February and April.
Spring brings clearer skies (although it can rain as well), and the weather is not that hot and not that humid.
Prices increase, and if you can, we recommend you avoiding Vietnamese New Year's Eve, which usually falls in February, as the rates skyrocket.
Although according to us traveling in the summer between March and August is not that comfortable because of high temperatures, these months are for sure the most popular ones.
Especially June till August as most of the people, both locals and foreigners, have a holiday at home, plus the weather is quite stable.
WHAT TO PACK
And what to pack for visiting Hue?
Well, as you can see, it would be a mistake to travel in the area without either a travel umbrella or rain poncho handy. Also, a fleece jacket or windbreaker should be in your backpack as the nights can be cooler.
As the weather in Hue can be very hot and humid, it is important to stay hydrated.
Therefore a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat are the must-haves.

HOW TO GET TO HUE
Hue in Central Vietnam is one of the most visited destinations in the country, therefore it is not hard to get to Hue.
It only depends on your itinerary, allotment of time, and then you can choose the way of transfer which would suit you the best.
Here are the options on how to get to Hue.
Bus | During our time in Vietnam we used solely bus transportation and found it quite reliable. Yes, some journeys took longer and were not that comfortable, but nothing we could not manage.
Especially in Central Vietnam, using buses was fairly easy.
It depends on what is your destination before Hue, but in general, you can take either overnight sleeper buses from distant places such as Hanoi or Dalat.
Or you can take normal local buses for example, between Hoi An and Hue.
We had visited Hoi An before arriving in Hue, and the ride took four hours.
The ride from Hoi An is very scenic, so try not to sleep. It is easy to buy bus tickets either at the bus station or in travel agencies and hotels at the front desk.

Because of the lower rates in Vietnam, it is quite popular among travelers to take tourist buses between destinations.
For example, this bus tour from Hue to Hoi An is well-rated.
Train | Hue is a stop on a railway connecting north and south, and you can get to Hue by train from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Danang.
Trains are comfortable and fast, so this is for sure a way to go in case you want to cover larger distances.
Depending on your itinerary, it is possible to choose from first-class and second-class compartments.
Motorbike | The road between Danang, Hoi An, and Hue is absolutely breathtaking, therefore this stretch of road is super-popular among visitors traveling on a motorbike.
Even if you are traveling around Vietnam by bus, you might consider renting a motorbike to get to Hue.
Plane | If you are short on time, it is possible to get to Hue by plane. Phu Bai Airport is 15 kilometers from the center, and it serves only domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
To get from the airport to the center, you can either hail one of many taxis (always bargain for the price), take public transport, or arrange your transport in advance.
It is wise to consider that the harsh weather, especially in the monsoon season can disrupt the service, so you should have a backup plan.
Also, for more connection options, you can check flights from Danang, which is only two hours drive from Hue.
Private Transport & Tours | As most of the travelers arrive in Hue from Hoi An, or head to Hoi An afterwards, you will be approached by many drivers offering their services.
The big advantage is that you can ask the driver to stop wherever you want, which is perfect on such a scenic drive like this one as it leads via Hai Van Pass.
Also, you can ask the driver to take you to other must-visit attractions such as Marble Mountains or My Son Ruins.
