The Real Reason Why Neymar Was Given the Number 10 Shirt at PSG (2024)

As the dust begins to settle on the transfer saga of the century, attention is turning to how the Brazilian will settle in new surroundings.

While we're still waiting to see if Neymar can make his debut for PSG in their Ligue 1 opener against Amiens SC on Saturday, one of the few things we do know is Neymar's squad number.

The 25-year-old has been given the number 10 shirt at the Parc des Princes – and it's all because of the club's history with that shirt number and Neymar's home country.

After winning the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, Ronaldinho was given the number 10 shirt at Paris Saint-Germain. It was his time in the French capital that shot him to stardom, as he scored 25 goals in two seasons and earned a move to Barcelona in the summer of 2003.

The club have reportedly given Neymar that shirt number so he can follow in the footsteps of Ronaldinho by becoming a legend in France and the premier player on the planet.

As a club, PSG have a unique link to the country of Brazil and by signing Neymar, that bond has strengthened.
