As a prof Susan is always happy and enthusiastic while giving lectures. The course is mostly participation and completion work which gives you an easy A if you follow the instructions. Overall an easy and enjoyable course to take out of the wrds sections.

This was possibly one of, if not the best classes I took first year. 70% of overall grade was based on if assignments were sent in time and fulfilled rubric requirements. Was not great with feedback, but was open to communication so long as you talked to her. Made the class useful and taught actual skills. Would recommend 100%. Be prepared to read

Dr. Sue is caring but assigns an overwhelming amount of work. Her unique grading system favors consistent participation, but it can be more lenient. Ideal for dedicated students, but the workload can be excessive.

Dr. Sue was a good, caring teacher. If you were present and showed up to class, you will do fine. Feedback was often sparse; yet all necessary material was available on canvas and I truly felt as if I learnt necessary skills from this class. Comparative to other WRDS classes and profs, this one seemed relatively easier.

She acts very nice at the beginning, so I was genuinely excited for her class. But, I soon realized that she does not reply to emails, is quite rude outside of class, and does not care for her students. She isn't too hard of a marker but does not give clear feedback. Lectures feel unnecessary to go to and not an engaging prof.

Took it with Dr. Blake this summer. Workload was reasonable and there weren't that many mandatory readings! Definitely cares about students and gives great feedback! Make sure to ask her for feedback because she is very willing to provide valuable feedback on your paper. She responds very quickly in emails and stays after class for questions.

She's mediocre at best. At first, she seems like she does want to help you, but after a while, she's very vague in terms of the assignments & submission and THERE ARE SO MUCH! We had like 20 submissions just for completion. She's also VERY EXTRA; she wants more, but she does not even know what she wants...

Honestly, shes very passionate about research and does provide great links to help you start your research paper. However, she is very unclear about her expectations and can be very vague. Its more self work than her teaching. Just saying the homework is basically every week and its kind of heavy at times. The organization was not the best

Blake would take 3+ days to answer emails. She's nice and is passionate about the material, but talks like were in grade 2. My subject was research articles and we had to read about 1 per week and have a big discussion about them. She's a hard marker, unclear feedback (would say opposite things for feedback), she does care about you, clear assignme

Lectures are kind of dry since she relied on the textbook heavily but I didn't really mind. She's actually really nice and approachable even though she seems monotonous sometimes.

I enjoyed dr. blake's class because she's passionate about the subject. She's really sweet & willing to help because she wants everyone to do well. The assignments are designed so you're on track to finish the research project on time. If you put the work in to do them (they aren't that hard), there's no reason that you should receive a poor mark.

Poor understanding of work load and awareness of schedules. Numerous heavy assignments each week that are worth very little. Can't tell if she talks to the class like 3 year olds or if its a passive aggressive thing but certainly did not look forward to going to her class.

Susan is a wonderful professor at UBC. Although she is tough, I found her to be so inspiring She is very passionate about writing and is always open to help give her students feedback so they can do better. As long as you attend class and ask for help you will do great in this course.

Dr. Blake is one of my favourite profs! She is so kind and caring about her students. She isn't a hard marker and her assignments really help you to stay on track with your research paper (which she really prepared us for). She also makes the topic of linguistic landscapes really interesting! Compared to my friends profs Dr. Blake was amazing

I did not expect this class to be as hard as it was. The amount of homework was ridiculous, especially when its only worth 1-5%. I felt as though Dr. Blake expected too much for a first year class. However, I did learn to write a research paper, but I think that was the only benefit.

Her class was honestly the worst class I've taken so far in university. She often has more than one assignment due every week, she takes forever to mark them and give you feedback on them, and the assignments often feel unnecessary . Some of her assignments are only worth like 1%, but require so much work. Treats the class like we're kids as well.

Honestly the worst class I've ever taken. I was taking it simply for the credit and it is my most demanding class. This professor expects an assignment to be done each week, and in some weeks there will be more than one assignment due. The expectations are almost always unclear. The reading is incredibly extensive. The lectures are dull.
